We have a small "mini makerspace" at the moment, which mostly includes crafts. We are working with a local science museum to bring teleconferencing equipment to both our institutions so that students may work with experts on projects. I see this as a high-tech way to eventaully connect with all kinds of experts who can help us or educate us about a variety of topics, maybe including archives.

We are moving ahead with highlighting our archives through a 50th anniversary celebration. Our local historical society is teaming up with us on this. Our major kickoff project for this event is an oral history program, which launches in May. We will have current students interview alum and current teachers interview former teachers. Interviews will be recorded and placed with "The Voice Library" http://www.thevoicelibrary.net/ and in our school archives. I am encouraging interviewees to bring archival materials to launch discussion and hope that we may get donations at that time. Teens will then have an opportunity to see their interviews and accompanying donations placed in the school archives and may wish to help process them because of their connection.

Our Learning Lab has evolved into something we call "The Pulse Program." I think some non-profits and religious organizations are so busy with the overwhelming tasks of today's to-do list that they lose the sense of the need for retrospection.

Every organization needs a historian--even the new ones and those who pride themselves on their "modern" mission. Each organization undergoes a process, and in the long run, that process becomes a history. We gift ourselves with organizational insight when we find ways to preserve our own history.

Your post reminds me of the value of doing so for every organization.Jacqi Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03471698670217119444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3589678736004297790.post-53365611397369414882013-09-23T10:20:49.597-04:002013-09-23T10:20:49.597-04:00Nice post, I totally agree with your point about l...Nice post, I totally agree with your point about learning individuals' personal stories as a vital way to remember a culture. Brogan reviewed Marshall McLuhan's definition of media. If a medium is actually any extension of the human body as McLuhan asserts then, Brogan concludes, online social networks, for instance, qualify as media because they "extend human relationships."

I am beginning to see how that would apply to all tangible forms of information--even "old" stuff like what you'd find in archives, or the fascinating example of the diary you found. That stuff becomes media to connect us with our past--to "extend human relationships," even if those people from the past are now long gone.

In your handling of the topic of archival material for your students, you are providing them with exercises which make real the concept of converting that media--those forms found on the information trail--into connectors that extend human relationships via a bridge across time.

How exciting for your students. And how exciting that your presentation is evolving as it resonates with those students. What a spark it's generating for future exploration!Jacqi Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03471698670217119444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3589678736004297790.post-28131267522159794392013-09-21T09:30:04.843-04:002013-09-21T09:30:04.843-04:00Excellent job! For example, my local Currier Museum of Art in Manchester NH has some great events and some continual activities for children. Museums are trying more and more to cater to children, but even if they don't I think it is never too early for a parent to introduce a child to fine art. Bring a toddler to show them colors. Bring a child who is a little older and ask them to find things in the pictures. Show kids different brush strokes and media and then go home and try it out on your own with them...the possibilities for using art in museums to educate are endless!
